Quality community theatre is alive and kicking here at Sandgate. We have 4 productions annually (5 shows apiece) We host the Yarrageh Drama Fesitval in September with amateur theatre groups from throughout South-East Queensland presenting their best one-act plays, and the general public are encouraged to attend.
Sandgate Theatre Inc has been performing since 1958, starting with a donation of £5,5s from the local Rotary group under the name ‘The Sandgate Little Theatre Group’ and this year we celebrated our 60th birthday.
Our recent show has just closed and “Death’s Desire”, a dark drama was well received with the audience finding humour and relating to the plight of the characters as well as enjoying the twist at the end. “The Vicar of Dibley” attracted our largest audiences and next year we will finish the season with a feel good musical so make sure you keep an eye out you will not want to miss it, (the lads are at the gym as we speak).
We rehearse at Bracken Ridge, usually on Tuesday and Thursday with some Sunday rehearsals needed as opening night gets closer. Shows are based at the beautiful historic Sandgate Townhall. With its lovely Art Deco ambience the auditorium is table seating and you are encouraged to bring eats and drinks, and all the lovely takeaways in the area means it is a wonderful inexpensive night out.
Tickets range from $10 for members to $22 for adults. Shows are over two weekends with opening night on a Friday and the matinee closing the show on the following Sunday. Doors open at 7pm and show starts at 7.30pm on nights and for the matinee doors open at 1.30 pm for a 2pm start. They usually run for just over 2 hours including the interval.
Auditions are open to the general public and everyone is supported and encouraged to give it a go. They are usually held a week or so at the close of the previous show at the Townhall over two nights, generally you will be asked to fill in a form and indicate what part you are interested in, you will be asked to read, singers will be asked to sing. A preview of the script is available to read-through prior to audition and you are encouraged to have a chat to the director who will include their phone number in the audition notice. If you are wanting to help behind the scenes please contact us anytime.
Community theatre is a unique experience where a wide variety of entertainment is offered through the year.
