The Grand View Hotel welcomes new owners!
Grand Old Dame of Cleveland set to reign for years to come with menu upgrades, service and local celebrations the top priorities
She has stood sentinel over the magnificent Moreton Bay for 168 years as the keeper of tales tall and true, and now the mighty heritage-listed Grand View Hotel in Cleveland has a new owner, and a flavour-filled future assured.
Queensland’s oldest licensed hotel, the Grand View (GV to locals) was built in 1851 by Francis Bigge and named The Brighton Hotel. Designed in the classic ‘Queenslander’ style, with deep verandahs around the perimeter, it served as an Inn for travellers and a bar for locals, with arguably the best outlook of any establishment in the state, and an ability to capture beautiful sea breezes like no other.
Bigge returned to England in the early 1870s, leaving the hotel in the care of Andrew and Mary Goodall, who bought it from him in 1878. Just before the turn of the century, at the same time as the train link to Brisbane was opened, the hotel was remodelled to its present form. It became the Grand View Hotel in 1910.
In 2019, the Grand View Hotel stands as one of Queensland’s most cherished, and this sense of history, community and local character will be celebrated and continued by the new owner, a local investor who has brought in Rydges Hotels and Resorts to manage the business with the top priority being to improve and expand the food offering, heighten the service levels and stand as a leading pillar of the local community.
In keeping with this commitment to the longevity and character of the hotel, experienced hospitality professional Keith Noyes has been appointed General Manager, and has already taken up the baton.
He joins the Grand View Hotel family with an impressive history having most recently worked with the Comiskey Group at the Eaton’s Hill Hotel, the largest pub in the Southern Hemisphere (and where he met Prince!), and another historic pub, the Sandstone Point Hotel. Prior to that he spent five years as Venue Manager at the Pig N Whistle running the Queen Street Mall property which was open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
“As one of the grand old dames of Queensland’s hotel register, the Grand View Hotel excites me greatly! It will be a privilege to tread those floors and work with the team, who are keen to see the hotel grow. The venue has so much potential, and with the new owner’s vision and passion, and the experience and support from Rydges Hotels and Resorts, I can’t wait to get stuck in and take her to new levels,” he said.
“Our priority is to review and renew the food offering, update the menus and really celebrate local flavours throughout the whole hotel. We will also focus on service standards and staff training programs to ensure this hotel is comparable to any in the country. With over 50 staff, we have a team that is committed and ready to learn and deliver on new priorities. And thirdly, we are keen to really celebrate being a big part of the local Cleveland and Moreton Bay region.
